Decorating Quick Tips - Mirrors

Decorative Mirrors

Mirrors are best used when they will reflect something worthwhile. Too often they are considered a quick fix and reflect an empty wall or stairwell. They are not to be used as a stop gap. Think about that fireplace and before you put the mirror on the mantel, have a seat and really look at what might be showcased, too often it is the ceiling fan and wall beyond!

In the case of your dining room, rather than a vast empty table, dress it with a runner, a floral arrangement and candleholders. Have it reflect abundance. If you want a more contemporary look, a collection of ceramics or even art glass could be created for reflection.

Bath Mirrors

Mirrors in the bathroom are too often frameless, endless expanses. Consider adding picture molding (if attached to the glass with double stick foam tape, it won't affect the walls adversely when removed.) This is easy to do with the wealth of framing resources today. Be sure to select a style in keeping with your scheme or match your fixtures, brass/gold, chrome/silver.

If molding is too traditional for you, add beveled glass strips in the same manner, available at most home improvement locations with tape backing for easy application.

If you have the luxury of a remodel or new home, use framed mirrors rather than plate mirror attached to the wall. These are flexible and infinitely more attractive. Be sure to use the largest possible, you don't ever want to cut off anyone's face or top of their head, even metaphorically!

Full Length Mirrors

Every bedroom needs a full length mirror, whether it is on the back of a door or featured as a cheval mirror on a stand. There is nothing more disconcerting than having to stand on the bed or on a step stool to try to get a full picture of oneself. Plan on this, it will be a real convenience. It will also save you the embarrassment of wearing mismatched shoes and socks, an occasional gaff caused by dressing in the dark without a full length mirror!

Mirrors as Illusion

Mirrors are not the only way to make a room appear larger and are not always the best idea. Often using a light color on an accent wall will make the wall visually recede, or placing a well chosen piece of artwork with a distant vista or far off view will do the trick as well. You may recall the popular murals of years past, including a life size floor to ceiling forest or beach scene. Both give the illusion of the space going on indefinitely.

5 Tips for Remodeling a Foreclosure on a Tight Budget

Adding so-called sweat equity to a property - in other words, investing elbow grease to make it more attractive to a buyer - is one of the basic keys to financial success for foreclosure investors. We all know that sometimes to make money you need to spend money, but at the same time it is critical to keep control of your budget so that you don't erase your precious profit margins.

The whole idea of upgrades is to add net value, and the bottom line for equity has to be calculated by first subtracting all your expenses - both in terms of money and in terms of your valuable time. With that goal in mind, here are five smart tips for maximizing your profits while doing easy property improvements.

#1

Paint Works Wonders

Paint and caulk are two of the best labor and money saving resources for the foreclosure investor. Use neutral colors because they cost less and won't clash with a buyer's taste or decorating scheme. The trick is to take the time to do a neat and tidy job, because even if you use designer paint nothing will detract like a sloppy paint job. Neatness counts, so prep and caulk ahead of time with attention to detail. If you do meticulous prep work you can use cheap contractor grade paint and still get spectacular results.

#2

Carpet is Convenient

Even if a house has hardwood floors, they may be in such bad condition that it is better to just cover them in carpet rather than trying to refinish them. Carpet is also a great way to hide an ugly vinyl or tile floor, and you can often find beautiful carpet at discount stores for a bargain basement price. Many carpet sellers will also deliver and install it for free, which saves you both time and money.

#3

Good Things Come in Small Packages

Sometimes homeowners spruce up the house with all sorts of expensive improvements, but then they ignore unsightly small details and that cancels out the entire effort. Small fixes are often just as valuable as the major ones in terms of marketing appeal, so take care of little repairs like inoperative doorbells, missing doorknobs, cracked window panes, torn screens, stained ceilings, and messy landscapes. They don't cost much and they convey valuable pride of ownership.

#4

Concentrate on High Impact Features

Rather than remodeling the whole kitchen or bathroom, you can just focus on items that produce the most impact. For example, instead of installing a new bathroom, just replace the toilet and resurface the tub and sink. Put a new stove in the kitchen, install bright lights, and lay down some bright linoleum and you can achieve huge results on a tiny budget.

#5

Stick to Your Schedule and Budget

Sometimes a piece of yarn will come loose on a sweater, but if you keep pulling on it you will unravel the entire garment. Similarly, it is easy to keep doing just one more thing - or buying one more fixture - until your small remodel turns into a bank-busting project that stretches on for months of delays. Know when to stop, and you'll finish faster with less money for higher net profits.

Although you may have the skills to perform your own do-it-yourself home improvements, don't get so bogged down in tedious tasks that you lose sight of your main goal of foreclosure investing. Prioritize your time, and if it is more lucrative to hire out some of your home improvement tasks don't hesitate to do so. That way you can still supervise the work without having to be on site with your sleeves rolled up the entire time.

How to Hire a Decorative Artist for Your Home

Hiring a decorative artist to work in your home is a personal experience. From the beginning planning stage to the actual process of painting, a homeowner and artist will spend many hours together. Below are five tips to aid the creative process, and insure you hire the most qualified studio that fits your projects needs.

Finding the Artist.

Home Shows, interior designers, and local home magazines are ideal places to find professional artists. Check out the walls of established hair salons or restaurants. Try the local phone book-- many times artists are included in the paint contractors category.

A quick search on the web, using key words such as "Des Moines Faux Finish" may lead to immediate local results when looking for a specific area. Make sure to go through the first three pages of your search. You may also try http://www.FauxDirectory.com, a national database.

Questions For The Artist and You.

When contacting the artist be prepared with questions. First, make sure the artist is an actual business entity, rather than a hobby painter. For example, decorative artists work is considered to be part of the construction industry in Iowa. Artists working on walls and interiors of homes are required to be a registered contractor with the state. To see if the artist your considering to hire check here http://www2.iwd.state.ia.us/contractor.nsf. Second, ask if the artist is covered by insurance. It is extremely important to ask if they are covered not only by liability insurance, but that all helpers on the jobsite are covered by workers compensation insurance. Decorative artists work on ladders and scaffolding on most jobs; safety must come first.

Other questions to ask include:

 Do you have a website?

 What is your lead time?

 How much is your consultation fee?

 Will you make a sample of any proposed ideas?

 Where have you been trained?

 Do you use professional, durable products?

While on the phone be prepared to explain to the artist what your vision and goals are for the proposed project area. Discuss ideas such as interior design style, or if you would like to add texture to the wall. Specific problems you are trying to solve, such as incorporating color into an open floor plan are crucial. Be ready to talk about budget--what is the amount of money you feel comfortable spending on a project.

During The Consultation.

Most artists will meet potential clients in their homes. An average consultation takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. If more than one room is to be discussed, prepare the artist before hand so plenty of time is scheduled. For large projects, a consultation can run considerably longer. Ideally, all decision makers are present. The artist will bring a portfolio of work. The portfolio can include a number of items such as large samples boards, photographs of completed homes, idea books, and color decks. Make sure to judge the portfolio on the quality of items, and not the sheer number. However, an artist who has many years experience will have a much larger portfolio than an artist starting out. Let the artist know what your budget is. If you do not feel comfortable, speak in broad terms such as "Between $1300-1800." By telling the artist an approximate price range, the best finishes can be chosen that fall into the budget. The artist will also measure out the wall or ceiling area, and take your contact information to return your estimate.

Compare Estimates.

When comparing estimates from several different decorative studios, make sure you are comparing the same finishes. An eight layer finish can range in the $8-12 s.f. category, while a 3 layer finish may price at $4 s.f. Glazed walls will be significantly less than textured finishes. The below example gives different price comparisons:

A small powder room is to mimic an old rustic and aged leather that finisher A. refers to as a colorwash. The finisher prices this at $1300. Finisher B doesn't recommend the color red for the bathroom, but suggest a light tan leather look, also referred to as a colorwash on their estimate. The price is $650. Though it may seem as finisher A is double the price, the finishes are greatly different. The red leather finish will need a grey primer basecoat, as well as 2 coats of red paint. Red paint is often priced slightly higher than other colors, due to the red colorants added. The brown leather finish may not require a basecoat--the homeowner has leftover wall paint, and the painter has agreed this will work great for the basecoat by showing the homeowner a sample. The painter then will have to glaze the walls.

Ask the artist for an approximate time frame. An artist working alone may need several weeks to complete a home with multiple finishes. A studio with several trained artists on staff will complete the project in a shorter period of time. Examine each estimate. If a painter's price is considerably lower than other estimates the standard of craftmanship may not be up to par with more qualified contractors. Weigh all factors-price quote, references, and professionalism before making a decision.

Hiring an artist is an exciting experience for any homeowner. Customizing your home, and inviting an artist to create an environment just for you is exciting and very personal. From asking and answering questions, to interviewing and reviewing estimates the process can be overwhelming. However, taking one step at a time, and focusing on your goals and vision will make the results tremendously rewarding.

Design Ideas For a Personalized Bathroom

A personalized bath can add a lot of character to your home. It's a way to put a personal touch on your space without going through a complete remodel. Often times you will move into a new home or apartment and it will just be basic fixtures that are perfectly fine but they really didn't speak to who you are. Here are a few tips for creating a personalized bath on a budget.

Don't let budget constraints stop you from at least trying. In small spaces you can really make a big impact just with color and a few small accessories. The first step is to really believe that you can actually make a difference.

The first step to a personalized bath is to really know what kind of design style you have in mind. This can be difficult for the beginning home decorator because they don't really have a design background and they might not really know about the different options that are out there. This can be another hurdle that may stop them from decorating completely. It can really help to take a few research hours to really get in touch with what your design aesthetic is so that you can re-create the look using materials and the money that you have available to you.

You can easily go overboard with most design projects. It's really important to ensure that you know when to stop. With this kind of space you will really be using a lot of creativity to figure out exactly what you like and what you want in your home. However, this can lead to a lot of clutter or a lot of little craft projects that really aren't that important to your space. In small rooms every item should be functional but that doesn't mean that it can't be beautiful as well as. When you go with the less is more approach you will probably get a high end look. Then you can really focus your budget on the most important items in the space to make the biggest impact and have a subtle feeling to your room.

Another option to get a personalized bath is to just do the work yourself. You'll have a variety of materials and colors to choose from. Often times you'll have a totally different idea from what anyone else would have. You will be able to mix and match colors, tiles and patterns to really create a unique look that is all your own. This can be neutral and at the same time different just by designing it yourself. You really get a custom touch that speaks to who you are.

Eco Friendly Interiors For Your Home - More Quick and Easy Tips

In a previous article "Eco-Friendly Interiors For Your Home in 6 Easy Steps" I covered the six main areas you could focus on when designing home interiors. Many people, however, have asked me for some tips that they could implement quickly and cheaply. So here is a collection of practical ideas that will make your home a healthier place to inhabit as well as reducing your carbon footprint.

Reduce power consumption

Nowadays low power light bulbs (long life compact fluorescent) are cheap enough to substitute for traditional tungsten filament bulbs throughout your home. The benefits are instantaneous; reduced electricity bills and less frequent bulb replacement due to longer operating life. Because they operate at much lower temperatures low energy bulbs extend the life of plastic light fittings and paper or fabric lampshades.

It may also seem obvious but if you switch off appliances when they are not needed (especially TVs & computer monitors, and charger modules) you will also reduce your carbon footprint at zero cost.

Also if you keep light bulbs and lamp shades clean and dust free you will have a brighter room.

Conserve heat and warmth in winter

Use window shutters, drapes and curtains to boost your comfort and also save heating energy. Another tip that costs nothing to implement is the old-fashioned but totally relevant idea of closing curtains and shutters at dusk on winter evenings. Many homes use sausage shaped cushions as draught excluders placed at the bottom of doors to keep cold out and warmth in. These cushions can be home made and designed with fabrics that co-ordinate with curtains and soft furnishings.

Clean up the indoor atmosphere

One of the consequence of improving the energy efficiency of your home is often a reduction in air circulation; i.e. less fresh air. You may find that in humid areas such as bathrooms you will need to install ventilation or extractor fans to reduce humidity. Also less frequent air changes can result in increased levels of domestic pollutants such caused by sprays, aerosols, perfumes, chemical treatments to carpets and wood.

Certain house plants also have a beneficial impact on air quality. We all know that plants absorb carbon dioxide and return oxygen to the air but research has shown that certain plants have extra benefits such as removing benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air. Several dozen domestic plants have been identified but these include well known ones like: Bamboo Palm, English Ivy, Gerbera Daisy, Rubber Plant, Mother-in-laws Tongue, Spider Plant, Weeping Fig.

If you find you are getting frequent condensation on the inside of windows then humidity could be too high, especially if you already have double glazing. Excess humidity can be caused by drying washing indoors in winter, hot baths, cooking and so on but it can lead to rotting window frames, lifting wallpaper and potentially dangerous moulds forming. For this reason it is not advisable to totally seal a home and prevent fresh air changes.

Stay local

Your environmental impact manifests itself in many ways, some less obvious than others. You should aim to use local shops and local tradesmen to work on your home since that will reduce road mileage and fossil fuel consumption, but do not do this whilst still importing building or decorating materials half way round the world!

Lighting without electricity

Many homes have areas that a dark even during the daytime and this keeps the electric lights on even as the sun shines. One great invention is the sun tube (e.g. Solatube) which harvests external sunlight and pipes in into dark corners of corridors and other window-less area of the home. These should be specified in new homes but are not too difficult to retro-fit either.

Choose domestic appliances with care

If you are about to splash out on a new fridge, washing machine, freezer, dish washer, or tumble dryer try to temper your desire to opt for the most stylish unit. In fact do not even consider any machine that does not have a high energy efficiency rating; choose kitchen appliances that are A-rated as they are the most energy-efficient. A new fridge/freezer could save you up money not just because modern units are designed to be much more efficient but because thermal door seals often perish on older appliances making them run almost continuously.

Finally

I hope you find these tips help you make your home a greener and cheaper place to inhabit.

And it helps to browse through a home design catalogue for ideas that might appeal to you. By the time you look at a few dozen pictures, you might get a fairly good idea what you want your own home to look and feel like.

Also, it helps if you are a do-it-yourselfer with fairly good skills at using tools, or at least are willing to do a lot of what needs to be done yourself.

Living Room Refurbishing Tips ...

. Paint one of the walls in a contrasting color.

. Add a few new cushions and some small area rugs as well.

. Change curtains if you feel that would be a good idea.

. You might want to spray paint the furniture in case it looks a bit run down.

Bedroom Refurbishing Tips

Home Decorating Cents

With all of the talk about the economy and rising gas prices, a decorating diva may be leery of spending her hard-earned cash, but there are ways to indulge that artistic homemaker that make sense and keep more cents in the bank. The following list will help those that are addicted to beautifying their home, but also interested in saving some much-needed money.

If It's Not Broke, Don't Fix It

With the instability of the economy and the job market, now is not the time for high dollar projects such as building an addition, putting in a spa, remodeling the bathroom, or renovating the kitchen. As tempting, as those pictures are in magazines of the sleek new appliances and luxurious countertops, do not get sucked into the hype. Projects that dip deeply into the pocketbook can wait for special offers, large discounts, or the next President.

If It Is Broke, Fix It Right Away

Leaking or dripping fixtures are a constant financial drain. Replace them immediately. The upfront cost will be much less expensive than the wasted water or damaged cabinets and floors. Home improvement stores often run weekly sales and kitchen and bathroom fixture usually make an appearance. If you do have to repair damage from leaking fixtures, be sure to check out those same sales for needed supplies.

Shop Online

Now more than ever, the internet is the first stop for many shoppers. Websites such a Amazon.com offer discounts that make them a better choice than the traditional brick and mortar stores. Shopping.com offers comparison-shopping with a click of the mouse, just enter the ZIP code that the item will be shipped to and compare total prices on any item. This is a good practice for any purchase.

Decorating In The Real World

Domestic divas and home decorating television shows often offer valuable advice on low cost décor and design, but sometimes that advice does not fit into the real world or real budgets. For example, a collection of brightly colored plates can add color and personality to a bare wall. That is a simple idea that makes a big impact. On the other hand, fresh flowers play a big role in the designs of today in the form of centerpieces and wreaths. An interesting idea, but who can afford to replace the flowers every week for every room? A quality silk arrangement is just as beautiful and much easier on the bank account and can be just as beautiful.

Home Sweet Home

Regardless of the economy, your house is your home. It is not only your showpiece and entertainment venue, but also where you live day to day. It is your haven from the rest of the world. While you may love the look of that luxurious white carpet, if you have children and pets, your time may be spent cleaning it. A better choice might be a darker color or laminate. Keep in mind your family and your lifestyles. Be comfortable and make your home uniquely yours.

Some Tips On How To Decorate Your Bathroom Using Stylish Bathroom Sinks

Styles are constantly changing, which isn't surprising as even the slightest change in trend can cause people to flip on their designs. People tend to stay in their houses, choosing to commit to one instead of moving around looking for a good deal.

For every bad trend there is a good one, offering a multitude of ways to dress up a house and make it more homey or just more sellable.

Some of them revolve around bathroom sinks and how they look. Some go for brighter colors. Fiberglass sinks are also available, as well as acrylic. It can really change its look in a single change.

Most people elect to improve the quality of the floors rather than just making it look good. The most popular option right now is concrete as it is reliable and will last a long time, making it cheaper in terms of repairs and the like.

For the bathroom and other sinks, you might just need to update the fixtures.

Those fixtures can be updated with gold or chrome options, which can instantly make a room feel more luxurious just by being there. Resin and plastic products just don't have the same toughness or feel like they did a few years ago - it's time to update the house.

Most bathrooms also opt to install a Jacuzzi instead of sticking with the good old tub. The thing here is that Jacuzzis are now cheap and affordable. They're also easier to find, which means that they can fit in nicely with any remodeling design. Most new houses have Jacuzzis preinstalled already.

No trend is for everyone, which is why you should make sure that you like it before you buying it. There are plenty of stores and websites that can give you a great idea of how it'll look together.

Also, it would be a very good idea to prepare a spare bathroom for the duration of the project... things can be come quite problematic if you forget to do so.

While remodeling anything can be quiet expensive, it doesn't have to be this way, especially if you're willing to put in some work on your side. With all of the different accessories available on the market, made out from various materials and shaped into many extravagant styles, making the right selection can be very intimidating and that is why I recommend that you take some advice from a decoration professional. Also, one of the best place to find tips for your bathroom remodeling project is on the internet where practically any bit of information is possible to reach. How to Choose the Right Small Bathroom Shower

How do you choose the right bathroom shower for your small bathroom? It is easier than ever before with the newest designs in the marketplace. Choosing a shower stall can be as easy as picking out your next husband. Seriously, there are some really beautiful shower stalls and small bathroom decor available today and it is fairly easy after you have measured your bathroom space and determined what size will work best for you.

Shower Stall

Choosing a stall over a bathtub was a fairly easy choice for me. While I used to relish the times I spent soaking in the bathtub, I now love my new oversized shower stall which replaced my old bathtub. Small shower stalls used to be relatively unheard of but now there are so many to choose from.

Your small bathroom shower plan should be drawn up first especially if you are remodeling. Make sure to measure your space correctly so that you will know what size to look for. There are rounded, hexagonal and square showers to consider and you may need to take a look at the different styles before you decide which one is right for you.

Styles & Designs

Shower designs for a small shower enclosure can start out at two feet by two feet. While you may need more room, this gives you the basic idea of where to start. Shower enclosures can be relatively expensive, so you need to look into all the designs for small bathrooms available to see what may or may not be in your budget.

Selecting the right shower for a small bathroom can be a fun thing, but be careful as to not fall in love with the first one you see. Usually the first ones are the most elaborate and the most expensive. Shopping online as well as in hardware stores can give you a little bit more variety. Something else to consider is your age. If you are getting older, you may need to consider a shower stall that is easy to get in and out of.

Shower and Tub

If you have the room and would prefer a shower/tub enclosure, there are many to choose from. Consider your space and again measure where you need it to be. Again, age is a consideration as we have gone from a shower/tub enclosure as I mentioned above not only for convenience, but the fact that as we age we are more prone to fall. My shower is built to step right out of, thus eliminating my risk of falling.

Small showers are nice to have and if you have the room and the luxury, you can add a shower stall to your bathroom that already has a tub. A free standing tub and a corner shower for example can come in handy and can give your bathroom more functionality, thus making your small bathroom renovation much easier.

Choosing the right small bathroom shower just takes some extra planning. You can easily accomplish this with the tips noted above. You have more choices than ever and it is a great feeling to find the right one for yourself.

Top Tips For Updating a Victorian Home

It is a like love gone bad, an affair that started of great but has now turned sour! The panel of oak wood that made your heart race, now makes you feel gloomy and dark. The alcoves, the turrets, the oddly shaped rooms seemed so inviting and romantic before, but now you have no idea on how to furnish and decorate your home!

After few years living in a small Victorian terraced house you can find yourself craving for a big modern bathroom, a simple open floor and ample storage space.

Older homes are beautiful and may seem like living a dream, but the truth is they are simply not designed for modern living.

The plan of a Victorian House seems cluttered and open spaces are hard to come by, instead you may find a maze of small rooms of almost closet size connected by a series of doors and hallways.

But none the less, Victorian houses have a lot of charm and with the right remodelling they can be a dream come true. Most people look to create more space by tearing down old walls, but look out!

Many of these seemingly insignificant walls are actually load bearing. They actually support the upper floors! While your house may not come crumbling down if you remove one wall, there is a risk of the floors beginning to sag. If you want to remove walls you should check with a reputable builder as it may be necessary to have supporting lintels put in place to support the upper floor. You will have to ensure that any major refurbishments made meet building regulations and planning permission is obtained, where applicable, before starting any major renovations.

Luckily there are many ways to update that older house and still keeping structure intact. Don't remove the entire wall, but cut openings in existing walls. The result will be more space, while still maintaining ambiance.

The number one complaint about Victorian houses is usually the bathroom. Even though modern plumbing were largely available at the time, Victorian bathrooms are small compared to many modern standards. But you can transform them into havens of peace and practicality by adding a few personal touches of Victorian or modern soft furnishings and clever decorating.

Finding extra storage space in a Victorian home has always been a problem, but here are some tips:

* Use the area below the main staircase. This can be opened up to provide space for bureaus and desks, if large enough computer stations can be placed here very effectively.

* Install bookcases or shelving around windows, doors and in alcoves.

* The number one rule is "No harm"- meaning do not purposely destroy the original styling and materials.

* Use the same fabrics and original styles wherever you can.

* Think creatively about the possibilities instead of the limitations of your house.

* Decorate in pale or neutral colours or bright vibrant colours to make small rooms appear larger and brighter.

* Choose full length curtains to add height to a room, coordinate with rugs, runners, cushions and throws.

Many Victorian houses are now seen as very desirable residences, so rather then moan and groan about your older style house reflect back and remember the unique assets which you fell in love with and turn your house back into a home your adore!

If you do not feel confident about any of the contractors in your area, do it yourself guides are available, and remodeling can be very fulfilling. It can also be quite stressful!

• If you want to include basement remodeling in your home maintenance schedule, transforming your ugly unfinished basement into bonus living space can actually improve the value of your home. It is often best to avid the common pitfalls of do it yourself, but if you have expert advice on walls, entertainment rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms and storage spaces it can be extremely rewarding to jump in and being constructing. • It might be advantageous to look through decorating books to get ideas on how you want your basement to look. Design pamphlets, agencies, and remodeling books can also have great ideas for home maintenance and remodeling basements.

• Do research. Do not go with the first local basement remodeling contractor you find in the phone book. Check out credentials. • Go to your local contractor's development agency or community better business bureau. Get multiple quotes from many contractors. You will find it very interesting that there are many different prices available. Do not always choose the lowest price. An old adage is "you get what you pay for." Research and discuss options with all contractors.

• Make sure your contractor uses quality materials. Do not skimp. After all, this is your home and the place where you will be entertaining and living. Always get a "no obligation" quote and give contractors the opportunity to compete for your business.

• Questions you should ask when hiring a contractor for your basement remodel include determining whether or not they are licensed, bonded and insured. Double check credentials. There are many stories of contractors who have false credentials, take your money and either do not start, complete, or even begin your remodeling job. Most companies are required by law to meet minimum requirements, and you should not hire any contractor without these documents. You will find that the majority of contractors are honest and hard working and do have references and credentials.

• Ask for pictures and testimonials. Just as if you are hiring an employee references can be a great help. If your contractor hires subcontractors, make sure these subcontractors are also bonded and licensed. Never hire any unknown contractor without "checking" them out first.

• With the difficulty of selling your home in today's markets, home maintenance and upkeep plus additional space options will give you an edge if you choose to sell.

Tips For Any Bathroom Renovation Idea

When we talk about remodeling popularity, bathrooms are the second most popular choice. However, public attention is conferred more on the kitchen than the bathroom. Due to limited availability of facts, it can get extremely problematic for individuals who attempt to get the remodeling of their bathroom done.

A designer said that the Americans, still, are puritanical when it comes to bathrooms Anyone who pays too much attention to decorating the bathroom very lavishly is surely to be considered a kind of oddball. But a decade ago the kitchen, as stressed by a leading bath and kitchen designer of New York, was at the same stage. This visible growth in the interest in bathrooms among consumers indicates a shift in this regard at a broader scale.

For many more Americans are getting to enjoy at the health clubs saunas, steam rooms, whirlpool baths and equipments of physical fitness along with the benefits of exercise. Home versions of bath facilities of health clubs, hitherto unknown, have witnessed greater demand and capital on the part of the manufacturer. The variety available in the market today is much better than it was earlier.

Whirlpool baths are in line amongst the three leading American manufacturers of bath accessories and fixtures. For example, the tub manufactured by one of them is seven by nine feet and is three feet in depth. This is to answer the hot tub. The tub combines aeration and recirculation with a capacity of nine people at a time. The price of the tub is $3,600.

This equipment also takes into consideration the new federal standards for saving water. There is also the availability of a wide range of trends in design, from reproduced old fashioned pull chain toilets to latest streamlined designs to choose from.

The customers who are in the market solely for these bathroom equipments should first take expert advice. An interesting way to gather ideas for the construction of your bathroom by a specialist is by touring around extensively all the wholesale baths and plumbing supply showrooms for the same. You can hire a professional bathroom specialist to do the work in your house after you have gathered enough information from there While this may lead to the rise in cost, the choice will also increase.

In this relatively very new field of bathroom designing has a wide variety of the degree of competence in a professional. You have to very carefully make your choice. You can take into consideration references from your acquaintances, personal and professional and after thorough research make you choice. A professional designer of luxurious bathrooms and a retailer of unusual bath fixtures suggest that individuals who intend to have their bathrooms remodeled should get a diagram or blueprint of their bath, locating existing plumbing fixtures and giving exact measurements in writing.

These measurements will be required by the plumber, contractor, expert or the designer to work any further. This will be helpful in saving time and money. Individuals who while doing some of the work themselves neglects expert advice on the same may have to shell out huge amounts to compensate for the mistakes they make. A lot of information can also be had from the manufacturers themselves.

How to Decorate Your Home With Painted Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles have come a long way from the plain, glossy ones of yesteryears to the more stylish models seen in a variety of types and categories. Sturdy and dependable, these tiles are a favorite with most people mainly due to the fact that they are a one-time investment. You just need to lay it once and they are there forever.

These days, manufacturers are coming out with printed tiles with attractive motifs and murals. But if you want your home to have a personal touch oozing with creativity, you better think of doing the painting yourselves or even hiring an artist who can give you lots of creative ideas. Painted ceramic tiles are perfect to smarten up kitchens, bathrooms, children's bed rooms and play area, living rooms, stair risers, fireplaces, fountains, display windows, etc.

You can even bring in flora and fauna indoors through this art. For example, suppose you are a nature enthusiast, and there is no way for you to have a window in your kitchen overlooking the garden, you can actually get an artist to paint a scene from nature or at least a few plants and flowers on the tiles in your kitchen wall. Similarly, you can remodel your bathroom by getting it painted with a picture which catches your fancy. If large murals are not your cup of tea, you can even paint pictures of your favorite spices, herbs, fruits, vegetables, etc on individual tiles spaced suitably.

Hand painting ceramic tiles can be an easy and effortless process with just the basic knowledge of products used as well as techniques. Basically, the tiles used for this purpose can be plain ones that have a gloss. Different types of paints can be used to embellish the tiles, but the preferred varieties are china paints that are manufactured from several metal oxides. You will also require suitable brushes, palette knife, lavender oil, turpentine, some fine tipped calligraphy pens as well as soft glass pencils. Make sure you have lots of rags available to wipe off accidental spills.

Once you decide on the room and wall to be painted, you have to finalize on a theme so that you are able to come up with a clear picture with or without the help of an artist. Make rough sketches on paper and then draw it up on a graph paper of the same size. After cleaning the tiles thoroughly with soap and water, transfer the design on to it. Mix in paints with oil and turpentine and just let your imagination flow on the tiles. Once you are done with painting them, you need to bake it in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 1350 to 1500 Fahrenheit, for the design to be permanent.

Decorating your walls by means of painted ceramic tiles can undoubtedly give you and your family years of fun filled moments, not to mention the possibility of finishing up with a uniquely done up house that has a great resale value too.

Fantastic Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

No matter the size of your kitchen, or where it is you may be tempted with using country kitchen décor. This is fairly easy to do as long as your home isn't particularly modern by adding accessories around your kitchen. You can use accessories to tie the whole theme together.

Many people get confused when they consider using rural kitchen decoration, they assume that anything that's hand made can be used in a country side kitchen. It is true that a number of items are suitable for use in such a kitchen, however not everything hand made is suitable.

You should consider adding your own photos to the walls of your home, particularly photos of nature. You could also add old medal signs which tie in with the country theme, perhaps using old fashioned milk casks. You could even use these milk containers as interesting planters.

If you like animals then you could equally add in some tasteful chicken and rooster models into your kitchen. These can help to tie everything nicely together.

Coordinated Accent Pieces Add To The Effect

It is possible to find towels and rugs to match this theme, however unless you want to buy lots of the same towel make your family aware that they're just for show. Many of these highly patterned towels are not very durable when washed. Finding accessories that match these things may seem like a minor thing, however it really can tie your whole kitchen design together.

If you want an authentic country design for your kitchen then you will probably have your eye on a huge wooden table. If this is out of your reach then there's no need to panic. It's possible to keep your existing table and cover it up with a nice table cloth. Adding seat cushions to chairs can not only make them more comfortable, but add authenticity to your design. For the most convincing design have chairs with spindles at the back which have the seat cushions attached to them.

The most noticeable feature in your kitchen will be your curtains. It is important to make sure the fabric you use for the curtains matches or at least ties in with the rest of your features. In particular you should make sure that the curtains do not clash with the wall color.

Just to show it's the little touches that make the whole difference, you can add a vase of fresh country flowers. During the winter a simple bowel of fruit and veg will work wonders!

Seven Ways to Survive a Remodel (And Save Your Marriage) Tips from Pisa Design, Inc

Remodels are tough on everyone. The house is out of order,

the refrigerator is out of pudding, and the family wiener dog

is out of sorts as he searches for his food dish. To help

ease the stress of a remodel, we suggest you follow the list

of tips below.
1. Invest in "his" and "hers" robes. During a remodel, your

house in no longer your own. Everyone from Pete the

plumber to Earl the electrician walks through your home at

all hours with little regard for privacy. If you'd rather they

concentrate on the work in front of them instead of you

walking by them, we suggest you invest in some

robes-preferable terry cloth for their comfort and thickness.
2. Stuff your speed dial with take-out. Even if the kitchen isn't

part of your remodeling project, it's a good idea to create a

robust file of take-out and delivery menus from local

restaurants. Place settings and candles on a cardboard

box where your dining room table used to be aren't

motivation for anyone to prepare five-course meals. And you

never know when you may find yourself without electricity,

natural gas or water. Plus, delivery guys need the tips.
3. Get to know that guy with his name stitched to his shirt.

Prior to starting your project, kindle a relationship with your

local gas station attendant. Buying bottled water, dairy

products and using the facilities will be a much more

pleasant experience when you know the person behind the

name. You may even get a smile every now and then.
4. Know when to drop everything and run. Just as you would

for a double date with the couple across the street, devise a

plan of escape. Even the best-run projects can try your

patience and linger on with no end in sight. Tack the phone

number and picture of a close friend or favorite hotel to your

refrigerator (if you still have one). Knowing that there's an

alternate site to the natural disaster that was once your

orderly home may be all the therapy you need until the

project is completed.
5. Hold off on conversations that start with "How was your

day, honey?" Conducting heart-to-heart conversations

around the dinner table during a remodeling process is like

carpeting your bathroom-not a good idea. Even if you delay

such discussions until later in the evening, you may find it

difficult to concentrate as you gaze at the rec room through a

hole in the floor.
6. Get-togethers are great-but not at your house. Family and

friends, they mean well. But under no circumstances should

you invite anyone over before the project is complete. Wait

for the paint to dry before you break out the fondue set. Even

if she wants to view the work in progress, you know full well

Aunt Mabel is bound to say something about the entry tile

that will send you into orbit and drop you back on Earth

feeling sick to your stomach.
7. Do not open until X-Mas. You may be tempted to plan a

party or host a family holiday shortly after the anticipated

project completion date. Don't. If you thought picking out a

faucet for the master bath made you sweat, try cutting up

jicama for your party and then noticing a blotch of ceiling

paint on the backsplash. Even under the perfect conditions,

remodeling always takes longer than anticipated. There's

plenty of touch-up work required up to a month after the

tradesmen call it a wrap. And it's not like the perfect

accessories are just waiting to be snapped up at your

neighbor's garage sale. Our best advice to you is that you

plan your first party six months after the estimated project

completion date.
We hope these survival tips come in handy as you plan for

your next remodeling project. If you're tired of survival tips

and are looking for someone who will offer you a wonderful

remodeling experience, hire top-notch professional interior

designers or architects who come highly recommended by

friends, family or associates.

Get Kids To Design Their Own Spaces

If you are designing your new home, keep in mind all members of the family. Kids can get stressed at the idea of moving to a new home, especially if it is in a new city. But by including them in the design of your new home, you help them feel empowered, share with them your excitement about moving, and most likely, discover new and creative ways to meet the needs of everyone in the family.
When designing, and decorating, think long term. Themes are great, but be wary of age-specific trends. Sure, you can always paint over the cartoon character wall stencils next year, but if you've gone all out with furniture and bedding that match the theme, that gets expensive, not to mention wasteful. It is best to stick with themes that can evolve as your child ages. If you child is really set on a particular fad you think they'll hate in a year, compromise. Instead of an entire bed set in that theme, just choose a couple of pillows that reflect it, and go with a more neutral overall theme. Instead of cartoon wallpaper, how about a poster of their favorite cartoon that can be easily removed at any time?
It is your job to be the responsible adult, but be very careful not to impose your own dreams on your children. After all, the point is obviously to let the kids have some input into their own rooms, and perhaps the overall house and yard designs. So listening and asking them questions about what they want is the most important thing. But having a few ideas of your own will come in handy if their ideas are a little too immature, over budget, or if they just can't make up their minds. Besides, in the process of brainstorming, you may realize there's a few childhood fantasies you just might like to integrate into your own bedroom or other areas in the home. In the meantime, here's a few practical tips:
While there is a tendency to put kids into the smaller bedrooms, it might not be the best idea. Having larger rooms can mean them keeping all their toys and other possessions in there, not spread around the house. Do you plan on living in this home when your kids are teens? If so, having enough of their own space for friends to hang out in could mean the difference between no knowing where your teen is on a Friday night, to knowing for certain that they are home safe, and having fun.
Think the same way when it comes to a bed, and, if possible, choose one that will last until your child is a young adult.
Also, consider an en suite bathroom for kids. The practicality of this may be determined by how many kids you have. While cleaning three kids bathrooms might not be appealing, think again of the future. As teenagers, children with their own bathroom won't be fighting with each other for space in front of the mirror in the morning. Especially if you have children of different genders, they will appreciate a private bathroom as they grow up. Plus, with some guidance from you, taking care of their bathroom space will also give them a jump on realistic adult housekeeping responsibilities.
When it comes to decorating, a really classy thing I've seen is to get some of the kids artwork framed. Framing can make things look so professional, and it's an ego boost for your kids to see their artwork framed. Also, think storage, and choose furniture that can do double duty. Bench seats with toy storage under them are excellent buys. Some ottomans are designed to open into storage boxes, and they are a great size for fun seats for kids.
Most important of all is to have fun talking with your kids. Even if you can't build everything their heart desires, you will probably come away from the conversation knowing them a little better.

Maximize Your Space With Functional Small Bathroom Designs

Remodeling a small space can be discouraging because every great idea you come across needs the space to execute it in, but in fact there are many great small bathroom designs that if done well, can open up the smallest of rooms and maximize the potential. There is no need to sacrifice comfort, style or practicality just because your space is a bit smaller than hoped, so find out how you can get a beautiful result out of a small, cramped space.
Opening up the space
A cramped room can often be opened up by simply placing things differently. Now in a bathroom, where pipes and plumbing are an issue, this may not always be possible, but there are different options to consider. Corner items are key. Whether it be a corner shower stall or corner sink and vanity, making use of those ignored corners can add a lot of extra usable space. Also, if corner options are not feasible due to the plumbing, forgo bulky tubs and sinks, and choose shower stalls, claw foot tubs or pedestal sinks. You get the same functional space but without added bulk which makes the room feel small. Finally, make use of your wall space for cabinetry and storage, since any extra item you have standing on the ground will just reduce floor space and ruin the open look you are trying to achieve.
Decorating Tips
Dark colors and excessive decor are detrimental to a small space, so choose your pieces wisely to accent, not inhibit, the space you have. Don't go with white since it will add little style to your room, but choose a warm color and light tones to lighten up the space. You can always choose a tiled border design to create some unique patterns and add some color without being overwhelming. For your sink, toilet and tub or shower, white porcelain is probably ideal since it will pop against the muted walls and feel crisp and bright.
You also don't want to cover any windows you may have, so instead opt for sheer window treatments or even glass blocks instead of clear glass so you get the light coming through without anyone being able to see anything. You also want to go minimal with the decor. Instead of full carpeting, choose an area rug outside the tub area. Decide on one item, perhaps a plant or candle, to place on the countertop if there is space.
Keep all toiletries placed out of sight since any clutter will make it feel more cramped. Add a painting with some color on the wall, but keep it to one good sized piece instead of multiple smaller ones. With a minimalistic technique, bright colors and lighting and well placed items, you can get the most out of your small bathroom designs.

Remodeling Your Bathroom on a Budget

Many people that want to remodel their bathroom find themselves on a tight budget and need to be able to find the best bargains. While cheap isn't always the best idea, you can find some good deals if you look around and to your homework. Here are tips to help you not only find the best bargains, but also to get the most for your money.
Most people head to their local home improvement store first. Big companies like Lowe's or Home Depot are probably close by and could have exactly what you need, but not necessarily the greatest deals. What it comes down to in this location is you will have to be a bit more flexible with your decorating choices. Check to see if something with a huge discount has anything wrong with it. This could be the reason it's at a reduced price.
If a product isn't that popular, and the factory decides that it isn't profitable to continue making it then it is often discounted to sell off their remaining inventory. Look for liquidating items, sometimes you can pick them up for up to 50% of retail price. Another way to get discounted merchandise is to see if you can buy the display model. Display models are still perfectly fine, but retailers can't sell them as new because they have been sitting out collecting dust and have been handled by other customers.
Another reason for a discount simply might be that the product isn't very popular. If by chance the factory believes it's not profitable to continue to make they will sell off the remaining inventory at a cheaper price. It's possible you can pick these up for a 50% retail price. You can also get a deal if you are able to purchase the display model. See, retailers won't be able to sell these for normal prices because they've been collecting dust for quite some time. Plus they are often handled by several customers.
You can also find a lot of good deals from estate sales, garage sales, as well as discount outlets. If you live in a larger area, one place you should always look for is the Habitat For Humanity Thrift Store. Almost everybody knows who Habitat For Humanity is, they build houses for people in need, and is a charity organization. Every year thousands of different companies donate products to them, but the problem is that this charity only constructs a few homes each year. Another good type to see are Granite Bathrooms.
Since they don't want all this surplus go to waste there have been thrift stores built around the country. This is where you get rock bottom prices and can find; fixtures, vanities, sinks, tubs, shower inserts, and even toilets. You will even be able to find off-the-wall stuff like tiles, knobs, cabinet doors and sometimes even paint and wallpaper. In the end when you remodel a bathroom you can get plenty of benefits if from any of the places above. Best of all the proceeds go back into the charity and help people get brand new homes. Also, be sure not to miss the various types American Standard Bathrooms.
